From My Files: “A Word Received”

168652_1352When I first began as a Young Life leader, I was encouraged to take notes, and keep handouts that were given to me.  I began collecting these in a three ring binder than soon multiplied into many binders.  I since have scanned these notes and handouts into my computer, making them searchable and much more useful.

I don’t know where I got the handout below, and I don’t know who wrote it.  I’m guessing it is purposely anonymous.  There are of course, varying views about prophetic “words.”  Regardless of your view, the document below is a great challenge to our life in Christ and in ministry.  For my part, without knowing the author or the circumstances, I have always taken it as an encouragement and challenge from a fellow laborer willing to be honest and remind the mission of our roots.

So, as I re-read this recently, I thought about our call to prayer, and intimacy.  I thought about the timeless invitation of our Lord to listen to him and obey.  I thought of our wonderful calling to reach kids. I hope it is a reminder, encouragement, and challenge for you.

A few questions this prompts for me:

  • Where am I tempted to do ministry out of my own strength?
  • Are Christ and His ways really my priority, or have I become “method oriented?”
  • If I were to take this warning to heart in my own life, how would it change the way I will live out today?
