Dr. Mark Killian has joined leadership42day as a contributor. He has been involved with Young Life since his middle school years when I was a student teacher at Amherst Middle School in Buffalo, New York.  We would hang out in the lunch room. As a high school student he played bass guitar at club (kind-of) and we all called him “Killer”….

Mark Killian received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 2013 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Whitworth University, a Presbyterian (PCUSA) school that maintains a unique historical connection with Young Life.  In the past Mark was a volunteer Young Life leader, an officer in the Presbyterian Church, and served on the leadership teams of two church plants. These ministry experiences caused Mark to investigate social scientific reasons for Church growth, leading him to study religious marketplaces and ecology during his time in graduate school.  His dissertation entitled, Everything In Common: Strength and Vitality in Two Christian Intentional Communities, illustrates how religious organizations strengthen members’ commitments when their congregational culture interacts with the local physical environment.
