Never Quit

Most of you are probably aware of the movie Amazing Grace which is about one of the heroes of the faith, William Wilberforce. Because of his convictions as a follower of Jesus Christ, Wilberforce led the battle in England to abolish the heinous evil of slavery…a task that seemed absurd and undoable at the time.  He began this mission as a young man. The time period from when he began his efforts as a young member of Parliament until slave trade was abolished and slaves were emancipated was 46 years. Can you imagine 46 years! We often give up if something doesn’t work in 6 months or a year…and say it was not God’s will! Forty six years means if we begin something today we finally see success in 2058. He died shortly after the slaves were emancipated.

During those decades he experienced repeated setbacks, threats, lies, denunciations and humiliations.  He never, never quit.  At one point when he was particularly depressed, believing his work was for naught, he read these words from his friend, the great preacher John Wesley. “Unless God has raised you up for this very thing, you will be worn out by the opposition of men and of devils.  But if God is for you who can be against you? Are all of them together stronger than God? Oh, be not weary in doing well. Go on in the name of God and in the power of His might.”

How do we keep on keeping on? By sheer raw human strength? No! Because it is a great human aspiration? No! Because we are somehow stronger than others? No!

These things will not sustain us in the battles and difficulties of following Jesus. In my strength I eventually quit.

We keep going because…

1) We know the end of the story. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, “Death is swallowed up in victory…God gives us the victory over these things through our Lord Jesus Christ.” This is not iffy. In time and space and history Jesus resurrected from the dead. We have nothing to fear. Death is defeated! As Paul says in Philippians 1:21, “…for me to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

2) Romans 8: 31 – 39 makes it clear that we are super glued to God. We cannot be separated from the love of Christ. Regardless of emotions, opposition, seeming failure, or long periods of drought He stays. He does not let go of us. Period!

3) Isaiah 55: 10-12 says, “ is my Word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire…” God promises that as we are faithful to His Word, it will bear fruit…in His time.

4) We go in the power of God, not our own. In Zechariah 4:6 God says, “…not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord”. We go forward in His power not our own. His power is perfected in…our weakness! So the very admission that we cannot do it is a wonderful thing. It opens the door for His power to move through us.

5) We are commanded by our Lord to GO. We are under orders.  He will protect us, keep the supply lines open and have the victory…even if it takes 46 years…or if we never see the result in our natural lives. It is His battle. We know the end of the story!

So in Christ, in His power…never, never, never quit.
