Abiding and Eternity. John 15:6

John 15:6  “If a man does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers.  Such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.”

Jesus here reminds His disciples of the eternal destiny of those who do not remain in Him.  In many other translations, the word ‘remain’ is translated ‘abide’.  Those who do not abide in Jesus will be judged and spend eternity away from the True Vine.

This should have two effects as we consider the fate of those who are not believers in Jesus Christ.   First, we should be extremely grateful that Jesus has chosen us to be his!  We have done nothing to deserve this, Isaiah says that our good deeds are as dirty rags compared to God’s holiness, but are the beneficiaries of His grace and mercy.   Not only that, but we are “participants in the divine nature” and no longer “objects of wrath.”  We have been made alive though we were once dead (Ephesians 2), made alive to do the good works that God has ordained for us to walk in.

Second, we should be motivated to join Jesus in His Mission to reach those who do not know his love and eternal security.    As we draw near to him by faith, we get to know Jesus’ heart for his children, especially those who are oppressed by the evil one and are looking for life in this world and finding only loneliness, emptiness and false idols of money, performance and relationships.

There are only two things in this world that are eternal- the Word of God and the souls of men.  God’s Word is where we see God in all His glory and where we see His love for us.   And in joining God in His Mission, we have the privilege and joy of seeing God reclaims the souls of lost men and women!

Lastly, there is a way of looking at this verse that can cause us to wonder if we will be thrown away and burned if we wander away from God.  We need to remember that the good work that God has begun in us will be completed at the day of Christ (Philippians 1:6).   The evil one wants you to doubt that you are God’s chosen and beloved and wants you to believe that you have to earn your standing with God every day.

You are vitally and eternally connected to the True Vine!  And because of that you can turn your attention to loving Jesus Christ and joining Him in His Mission to seek and save the lost.

Ask: Am I believing the truth of the Gospel that there is nothing I can do to earn His love for you, and nothing you can do to lose your salvation?

Apply: Ask God how you can join Him in reaching your friends, neighbors and co-workers who do not know his amazing grace.
