The Result of Remaining. John 15:5

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

There are very few verses in the New Testament that are more clear and vivid than Jesus’ words to his disciples and us about remaining in the Vine.  What a great word picture…He is the Vine, the provider of ALL that the branch needs.  His promise is that He will remain in us provided that we remain in Him.  If we do so He gives another promise: that we will bear much fruit!  Let us look at this promise in more detail:

If- The promise is conditional (even as his love for us in unconditional)!  Am I determined to remain in the Vine each day?  It will take resolve and focus, but there is no greater or more fruitful place that we can be than connected with the true vine.

a man- This is not for men only, but man as in mankind.  This promise is for each of us and provides the true measure of who we are.

remains- A continual and daily focus on staying vitally connected to our source of grace, nourishment and purpose.  The great hymn says, ‘Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love.’ Our fallen nature yearns to wander, but Jesus promises that He will remain in us and never wander.  In order to remain, we need to be constantly focused on and respond to his moment by moment love for us.

in me- What we remain in is of vital importance!  Jesus, by his grace, allows us to connect to him and remain in him, despite our sin and wanderings. Whatever we are distracted by is a lesser god and cannot sustain us and bear the right kind of fruit through us.  The King of the universe has condescended to allow us to be connected to him.  All that we need for life and godliness is found in him and him alone!

he will- A promise of God that can be relied fully upon!  All God’s promises are ‘yes’ in Jesus Christ.

bear- Naturally produce in the proper season, quantity and design.  Jesus says that a good tree will bear good fruit, just as a bad tree will produce bad fruit.  The way the fruit is borne is a mystery, but it is a sure process.

much- How many seeds are in an apple? Usually 5-10. How many apples in a seed?  The answer is limitless!  Through the power of reproduction, one seed can fill an entire orchard with apple trees and countless apples over its lifetime!  So is the power of the seed of the Gospel within you.

fruit- Internally, fruit is the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self control.  Externally, fruit is the reproduction of the life of Christ in others.  This is the great mission that Jesus has for us, to bear fruit internally and externally for the Glory of God.

ASK:  Am I willing to orient myself towards remaining connected to Jesus today?  Will I return each moment that I find myself wandering?

APPLY:  Will I understand and respect the growth process as it applies to my soul?  Do I really believe that apart from Jesus Christ I can do nothing?
